On the 21st June 2018 the final place of the Rising Star Series took place at Hawkesbury. Following his previous efforts throughout the series, Jean Van Overmeire only had to secure a ride in the final race in order to win.
Prior to the race, JVO was leading the series with a total score of 40 points, folowed by Mikayla Weir in second on a total of 33 points.
The scoring system is as follows…
1st place- 7 points
2nd place- 5 points
3rd place- 3 points
4th place- 2 points
5th or over- 1 point
Despite knowing he only needed to take part in the race to win, JVO punched home $4 favourite LEGISTATION trained by Wade Slinkard to victory in the 1400 metre final. The Aussie Rules gelding bounced out the barriers and stalked the leader, JARRETT ridden by Patrick Scorse, before creeping up and challenging him at the home turn. At the 100 metre mark it was down to a two horse race between LEGISTATION and JARRETT, a battle of determination that was won by LEGISTATION (winning margin- 1 whisker!… or 0.5 lengths to be proffesional).
“It’s been hard work but it’s a great feeling to win” smiled Van Overmeire in his post race interview. Jean’s family were there to cheer him home on the day and were extremely proud to see all his hard work pay off.
From all of us at Thoroughbred Events Australia, we would like to congratulate Jean on winning the Racing NSW Rising Star Series 2017/2018 and wish him the best of luck for the rest of the season.
