Yass picnic races was literally that – a picnic at the races. This is one of the very few racetracks where you actually BYO everything for a day at the races. This makes for a wonderful family friendly atmosphere where kids can roam free and be perfectly safe.
It was in 1901 that the Yass Picnic Race Club was founded making this one of the oldest picnic race clubs in NSW. The Marchmont Racecourse is located on Gums Lane, Yass not far from Canberra.
So the Martin family packed their car with picnic blankets, chairs, esky and things for the kids to play with for the day saying “It was so lovely to spend the day together as a family and enjoy the horse racing atmosphere as you can get really close to the race track.”
Yass picnic races also runs Fashions on the Field for best dressed lady, man, couple, millinery and junior boy and girl. Sponsorship on their biggest race meeting of the year, is very generous with some fantastic prizes.
Our Canberra Ambassador Sally Martin could not be more proud when her son was named best dressed junior boy and Sally herself, was named best dressed lady. Suffice to say the prizes were shared amongst the family, with Sally and her husband are planning to return to Yass in 2020 to spend the day and their vouchers!
Yass itself is a lovely, friendly town to spend the day and Sally has plans to make it a family tradition to attend the races every year.
