Welcome to our first edition of Fashion Friday. At Thoroughbred Events Australia we have been so proud to bring to you fashions from all over Australia – showcasing where we are, the fabulous Fashions on the Field that we host around Country NSW and our amazing milliners who have supported our millinery events in Sydney.
We would like to bring OUR stories into your life about millinery and race wear fashion.
This is by far the busiest time of the year for the millinery industry. Not only are there fashions at the races but there are events all over the countryside – in restaurants, pubs, hotels, and even those putting on a party at home. It is the day that stops the nation.
We thought we would catch up with some of our favourite milliners to see where they will be on Melbourne Cup Day and what this day means to them.
Let’s start with the fabulous Brenda Lui of Crazy Teapot
Where will you be Melbourne Cup Day Brenda Lui of Brenda Lui-Designs and Crazy Teapot?
It is my first time to the Carnival and will be attending Melbourne Cup and Oaks day. I have been invited to take part in the Millinery Award Competition on Oaks Day for the first time so am busy working on a very special creation.
Attached is my Lilac Floral Halo Hat $450 which was a finalist in the Brisbane Fashion Month competition this year available to purchase through my website www.crazyteapot.com with Afterpay or Paypal.

Where will you be Melbourne Cup Day Jane Stoddart?
On Melbourne Cup Day, I will be still making hats! Final client pick-ups and working on my Oaks Day Millinery Award piece. Preparing to fly down to Melbourne on Wednesday :)
Melbourne Cup day mostly means the frantically busy last couple of months are nearly over and I can finally have a rest!
Not sure why this much admired beauty still hasn’t found a head?! But here is a piece for immediate sale if you are after a stunning Rose gold and cerise headpiece – a winning combo this season!
Where will you be Melbourne Cup Day Kathleen Watson of Kathleen’s Creative Millinery ?
Melbourne Cup has always been a wonderful experience for me having been on a few cruises where I judge, host and show those on the cruise the craft of millinery. It will be another working day for me but this is what I love to do.
I will be showcasing headpieces at The Entertainment Grounds for those girls who walk onto the track without a piece. But of course very happy to sell to anyone who sees something they love and wants to buy a piece for the next time they attend the races.
Where will you be Melbourne Cup Day Rebecca Hanley of Hanley Hats Millinery and Racewear?
I will be at home packing any last minute items into my luggage in anticipation for my trip to Melbourne for the Oaks Day Millinery award.
The best part of Melbourne cup this year is that it’s my birthday, I was lucky enough to born on this day the same day Arwon won the cup.
This season has been a very successful one for me this year. I have been designing away as well as making millinery. With only a few pieces left, I wanted to attach this piece that I still have available for sale – $180 plus post. It looks fabulous and very easy to wear.
Where will you be Melbourne Cup Day Chantelle Westlake of Lauder Taylor?
On Melbourne Cup Day I will still be making pieces, as I have taken a huge amount of orders this season. This is by far the busiest time of the year.
I look forward to attending Oaks Day and entering the millinery designer award. It is great to see so many amazing milliners work. After that, it will be some much needed sleep.
I have 2 lovely pieces available for sale. Contact me asap. Based in Melbourne so can pick up.
Where will you be Melbourne Cup Day Hats in Fashion by Kerry McGlone?
I am so exciting to be heading to Melbourne for the whole week. I love being with my daughter and this will be a mother and daughter special week for me.
Melbourne Cup Day marks a huge day on the racing calendar and you would not be Australian if you didn’t know what this day is. This year I have made many orders for special clients but my favourite is always making for my family. My family always comes first. I didn’t make a huge collection this season with nearly everything selling at TEA’s event. I have only had time to create a few – but for me, I love creating as I see the outfit and then I am inspired.
But there is no rest because as soon as I return I am off to Goulburn – Girls Day Out – Hooves, Heels & Hats where I am the millinery sponsor and also assisting Thoroughbred Events Australia on the day. Both the MC (Sharon Lenton) and myself as Judge will be wearing one of my pieces.
I would love to thank the contributions by the milliners as I know how busy they are.
We wish everyone a very happy MELBOURNE CUP DAY. Most importantly, love this day that is so iconic for Australia – enjoy the fashion and millinery and all the colour and glam this day brings.
